So, you're getting a new phone, or upgrading your old one; but you have messages you need to save?

This is the guide for you.

Please follow these instructions closely, and make sure you don't miss any steps.

Export Messages (Backup)

First, on your current device, you will need to use the 'SMS Backup & Restore' app. This should already be installed on devices that haven't yet been migrated.

Follow the on-screen prompts and grant all the permissions required by the app. Then, select Set Up a Backup.

You will be asked what you want to back up - by default, all messages and call logs are selected.

Next, you're given a list of options. Next to OneDrive, select the toggle. You will be asked to sign in - follow the on-screen prompts and allow access to all files within OneDrive.

After you've signed in, you should see 'Status: Logged In' with your email address. Select Test to ensure that OneDrive is connected properly.

If you want, you can select a different folder where your messages will be saved - this is optional. Leave the other settings as the defaults.

Press 'Save' and then 'Next'. You will be asked if you want to create a backup schedule - this is optional. Finally, select Back Up Now to run the backup.

To ensure the backup has completed successfully, look for the file in your OneDrive. It should look similar to the below - the filename will be 'sms' followed by the date and time.

All done! You can close the app now and go about your business.

Import Messages (Restore)

After your device has been migrated, you will need to install the SMS Backup and Restore app from the Play Store.

Follow the on-screen prompts and grant all the permissions required by the app. Then, select Restore. You will be asked where you want to restore from - select OneDrive Location.

Sign into OneDrive. If you haven't signed in before, you will need to set a PIN as well. The app will automatically detect your backups from before - verify that this is the correct date. If not, choose 'Select Another Backup' and select the correct file.

Once you're happy the file is correct, select Restore.

Follow the on-screen prompts. You will be asked to change the default messaging app to SMS Backup and Restore - this is so that the app can correctly restore your messages. After this, you'll see an on-screen report of how many messages have been restored.

Once it's complete, open the Messages app to confirm your messages have been restored. You will be asked to set Messages as your default app - do this and you'll see all your messages!

If you like, you can set SMS Backup and Restore up to run regular backups to your OneDrive now that your phone has been migrated.
