How to use custom backgrounds in Teams

When in a meeting in Microsoft Teams, you have the ability to change your background. This can be useful if there's a lot going on in the background and it's distracting, or if you're part of a meeting with third parties and need to use the official C+K branding.

If you're joining a meeting, you will have the option to check your video and audio settings before entering the call. From here, you can select Background Filters, which will allow you to change your background.

The C+K-branded backgrounds are at the bottom of the list.

If you are already in a call, there will be an arrow next to the 'Camera' option on the toolbar. Open this, then select More video effects and settings.

A pane will appear, where you can select from a variety of different backgrounds. If you're using a work's laptop, you should have access to the C+K branded backgrounds, which are at the bottom of the list.

If you do not have the backgrounds available, there is guide to add them at the bottom of this article.

Select a background and click Preview to see how it'll look. While previewing, others won't be able to see your video. When you're happy with it, click Apply.

Please note that removing and replacing a background is tricky to get right, and Teams has to do this 'on-the-fly' - so you may find that you have a soft edge or your hair doesn't look quite right. This is simply the nature of the software and what it's doing, and it will improve with regular updates.

What to do if you don't have the backgrounds available:

First, download the backgrounds from SharePoint. They can be found at this link. Right-click on each one and download it.

Next, go to More effects and backgrounds as above, and click Add New at the top.

Finally, browse to your Downloads folder and select each background from there. They will need to be added individually, but once they're there, they'll be there permanently.

This will work with any image, so if you have any nice (and appropriate!) photos you want to use in internal calls, feel free to add those too.
